KATRINA VICTIMS ACCUSE OIL COMPANIES FOR DESTRUCTION OF NEW ORLEANS; CLASS ACTION SUIT FILED.
Exxon Mobil Corp., Chevron, Shell Oil, BP, and several other companies related to the oil industry are being sued in a class action suit filed in federal court on September 23rd. blaming the oil companies and related companies for the destruction of New Orleans. This suit represents all the victims devastated by hurricane Katrina.

First, a few facts that have emerged from the destruction by Katrina. It is the largest natural disaster in the history of the U.S. (Not According To The Class Action Suit!). 400,000 people were made homeless. The last death count in New Orleans was 1,036. Insurance claims, as of this writing, total $34 billion and are rising every day. And the earliest projections for the restoration of New Orleans is that it will take over a year.
Now for a brief history of the city also know as "The Big Easy," so called because of the relative
ease that musicians can find work in the city.
New Orleans was founded by the French in 1718, nearly 300 years ago. It is a major port city due to its location near the Gulf of Mexico. Also the petroleum industry has a very large stake in New Orleans and in the developed marshlands that reach all the way to the Gulf of Mexico.
And this brings us back to the class action suit. The lawsuit alleges that one million acres of marshlands in southeast Louisiana have been destroyed as the result of the oil companies destruction of these marshlands.

Even though New Orleans has survived fires, famine, floods and various other natural disasters in the past, it could not fight off Katrina because of the destruction of the natural barrier of some 150 miles that had become a buffer zone against storms from the Gulf of Mexico. At least until the 1940s when major oil firms, named in the suit, began dredging the marshlands with disastrous consequences as Katrina proves.
