PIRATES BEWARE: CRUISE SHIPS GOING HIGH TECH TO FOIL ATTACKS.Seabourn Spirit
When the Seabourn Spirit, pictured above, was 100 miles off the coast of Somalia last year, it was attacked by pirates. The captain thought he was safe, but two speed boats, one seen below, filled with pirates armed with automatic weapons and grenade launchers and grins on their faces attacked the ship. This time, the ship was prepared with its newly onboard equipped LARD.MODERN DAY PIRATES WITH ARMS
Long Range Acoustic Device (LRAD)
LRAD has been used by the Navy for several years and emits a defeafing, disorienting sound that confuses the opponent. And with this new device and several other secured measures, the ship was able to escape from the pirates with minor damage.
Since a high of 450 pirate attacks on ships since 2,000, the successful pirate attacks have diminished to such a point that Lloyds of London, which insures many of the ships, especially the 50,000 that pass through the treacherous Straits of Malacca, crammed between Singapore, Indonesia, and Malaysia lifted its "war zone" status for the Straits of Malacca and reduced ships' premiums. Of those three countries, only Singapore has stepped up to the plate to use its military to effectively stop these attacks.
